Bettisfield is a small, rural village of around 150 dwellings on the edge of the Welsh Marches, straddling the Llangollen canal. Bettisfield is in a unique position as it adjoins one of the largest and most southerly raised peat bogs in Britain, the Fenn’s, Whixall, Bettisfield, Cadney and Wem Mosses.
Bettisfield is surrounded by countryside whose farms and estates once provided employment for villagers.

Many of the farms and properties were owned by the Hanmer Estate until 1920 when outlying properties and farms were sold to pay death duties. Bettisfield can no longer boast of a shop, post office, pub, smithy or bakery. Bettisfield Station and the Cambrian line on which it stood have long since closed and our village school now enjoys a new lease of life as the village hall. The market towns of Whitchurch, Ellesmere and Wem each lie about 6 miles distant to the . northeast, west and southeast.

I was interested to read a poster outside the Village Hall promoting a forthcoming “Car Wash” to raise money for signs to alert drivers in Bettisfield to watch their speed. I fully support the Youth Club in their efforts and wonder if they are aware that this concern was raised at the Community Council Meeting in April 2011 and I personally raised the same issue 2 years ago. A follow-up in June stated that the issue will not be taken any further since a survey conducted found that the average speed of cars travelling through the village was 23mph! I would be very interested to know where and at what time this “survey” was carried out since I have NEVER witnessed a vehicle pass my house at anything like 23mph! The speed at which drivers pass through Bettisfield is a real concern for all – surely it is something that the Council should be actively backing too?
